Shake-a-Phrase, by Artgig Studio, universal, is a wonderful tool for the creative-thinker. Need a boost while writing that first novel? Want to give your kids fun ideas for their story telling games? Trying to make grammar a bit more fun and goofy for the kids? Shake-a-Phrase can do all that and more.
Anyone who has had to write an original work knows that writer’s block is one of the most frustrating obstacles to overcome. There is nothing more frustrating than staring at a blank page or screen, unable to invent an interesting plot.
Shake-a-Phrase would have been a real life saver when I was writing my senior project in college and I’m very happy to have it on my iOS devices now to break through any lack of creativity I may experience.
Shake-a-Phrase is not a one-trick pony. It is obvious the developers wanted to make this app multi-functional, multigenerational (it’s the rare edu-app that would not seem patronizing to an adult ESL student) and educational.
The most popular function is the random phrase generator. Shake your iDevice and it will generate a wacky, random phrase that will get your imagination rolling. For instance, the phrase it just gave me was, “The mysterious yet bouncy specialist guided a distracted carpenter.”
Here’s a great video demo of what this app can do:
Another great feature is the “Story Starter” function. The app generates ideas in the form of questions or a statement to get your mind going. I just got, “Imagine a faithful trustee and a mindless guard buried in the wilderness…” Keep shaking it up until you get the right idea.
The last function is perfect for grade and middle schoolers, or any adult needing a grammar refresher that’s play, not work. It’s the “quiz” function. Phrases appear on the screen, and users are asked to identify the parts of speech in the sentence as quickly as possible, for instance, “Identify all the nouns.”
The faster you touch the nouns, the better your score. This is a great way to quiz your kids on parts of speech and keep things fun!
The area that could be improved upon are the graphics. They’re not bad, but they could be better. The main menu appears blurry, even taking into account that the app is meant to have a somewhat 3D look.
Shake-a-Phrase is fun and creative. It’s perfect for storytelling, writing, party conversation-starting and grammar quizzing. If you appreciate your creativity you might want to mentally shake things up with this app.
