Leo the Lightning Bug (universal) by Oceanhouse Media, (OMBooks) is the latest in a long line of insta-classic kid-lit titles on iOS from the publishers best known for bringing Dr Seuss to life. They do not disappoint with this newest addition to their huge catalog
It is a beautifully written and illustrated story by well-known children’s author Eric Drachman. Readers follow the tale of Leo, a lightning bug of course, as he learns to find his own inner light and lets it shine for the world to see.
The art in this book is breathtaking. The colors absolutely pop on iPad 2 and this vibrancy brings Leo to life, and adds warmth to the narrative.
The story itself is endearing and teaches a great life-lesson. Kids will empathize with Leo, who desperately wants to light his tail, but cannot. His mother urges “patience and practice” as he discovers his inner lion.
The plot highlights how being made fun of for not being able to do something can hurt. Leo, like so many kids, has to overcome teasing. But, with support from his mom and determination, he perseveres.
Like all OM digibooks, the app can read to a child, while highlighting the text in sync to foster word-sound associations, and has both read-alone and fully automated modes to customize the app to individual pre-reader’s needs.
There are also new features that made their debut in OM’s last Seuss offering, Oh, The Thinks You Can Think! and many are include in this app.
Look for a find the hidden sounds game, custom backgrounds for each scene, pan and zoom features to fully explore the art, and new OM titles now have both retina display for iPhones and iPod touch models, as well as enhanced graphics for iPad.
Leo the Lightning Bug, with its rich illustrations, and smooth perfected interface, is another winning digital storybook from OM that will make a wonderful addition to a child’s virtual library.
