Mobad offers up something really special in this Peek ‘n Play kid-lit offering. The artwork is delightful and creates the illusion of depth. Tilting the device increases the illusion without the need for special glasses. It’s not quite movie quality 3D, but neither do the images lie lifeless on the page. This book pops and so will young eyes!
This contemporary fairy tale about how roses got their color is an original text written for Mobad CEO’s three year old daughter. The personal touches show.
On each of the 24 pages there are sumptuous illustrations, beautiful animations and sound effects – try playing the clear roses as instruments – and tons of cute surprises for readers to discover.
The Penelope Rose has all the features one expects in a good interactive children’s book. It can be read aloud by a pleasant sounding female narrator for younger children, or budding readers can try to read the kid-friendly text on their own. A tap on a word or a slide across a sentence will help if they get stuck.
The story itself is engaging, and there are tons of elements to explore. And, an ongoing game of “find the hidden pixies” is playable on each page too.
A lot of attention went into the interface. Each page has hints revealing how to interact with the features, and navigation is easy.

The only downside I found when i first reviewed this book-app on appadvice.com, was the load time for each page was on the long side, and page turning was not as smooth as I would have liked.
But, recent updates have much improved the performance and my first test was on an original iPad. On iPad 2 and with version 1.3 the experience is absolutely fluid.
The Penelope Rose is an ideal choice for something fresh to engage young children with digital reading. Every detail is tailored to create an immersive, delightful experience children will want to relive over and over.

My little one will love this, as he loves Interactive story books. Since my son is extra hyper and always busy moving he needs to Stop and Smell The Penelope Rose!
