Five Little Monkeys With Nothing To Do (universal) by Oceanhouse Media is a children’s book-app from Eileen Christelow’s Five Little Monkeys series that will teach children to think twice before complaining, “I’m bored.”
In this story Grandma Bessie is scheduled to visit her grandmonkeys one afternoon. While the little monkeys wait for her to arrive they complain to their mama, “We’re bored. There is nothing to do!” With each complaint their mama answers, “Oh yes, there is,” and proceeds to give them chores like picking up their room, scrubbing the bathroom, and picking berries for dessert.
After all their chores are complete they traipse with muddy feet through the house, bathe, and put on their best clothes. After greeting Grandma Bessie at the door they enter the house surprised to find it disorderly again and ask, “Who messed up our nice clean house?”
With their boundless energy and eager cooperation, the five little monkeys show that housecleaning can be fun.
Christelow’s clean and expressive watercolor illustrations brings life to characters as they try to bring order to the household. Reading options include: read to me, read to myself, and auto play.
The interactivity is limited to the teaching vocabulary and pre-reading skills. But, this is perfect for keeping children focused on the text and enjoying the actual story.
I liked the original Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, but found both the story a bit light, and the illustrations a bit washed out. This latest instalment in the series is much more vibrant with retina display support and the tale itself has more substance.
The emphasis of all Oceanhouse Media titles, which includes iconic favorites like the Bearenstein Bears, and most notably, Dr. Seuss’ beloved works, is on the story and the vocabulary words. Kids can tap on pictures to learn words, tap on each word to hear it read aloud, or press and hold a paragraph to replay.
The sounds in this title include steady monkey chatter in the background, a vacuum cleaner, and other ambient noise. There is pleasant-sounding professional narration that will appeal to children and adults.
Five Little Monkeys With Nothing To Do is an entertaining and amusing digital storybook for children that has just enough interactivity to enhance the book without turning it into a game. Parents will like that the story reminds children to refrain from complaining about being bored and hopefully will help them to remember not to muddy the newly washed floors.
