The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin  (universal), is a lighthearted Halloween tale from Oceanhouse Media.  Children will fall in love with Spookley, a pumpkin that is not like the others.

The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin is from the book of the same name by Joe Troiano. With illustrations by Susan Banta and professional narration by  Bobby “Boris” Pickett, the app version is true to the original book.

Autumn is here, and one of the many Halloween traditions is the family trip to the pumpkin patch where there are pumpkins that are round or oval, large or small. Imagine walking along the field and discovering a square pumpkin.

Spookley is ostracized by the other pumpkins in the patch because he is, well, square. It takes a harrowing storm that threatens to destroy the whole patch that Spookley comes to the rescue in a unique way.

Like other OMbooks, The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin has three ways that young readers can enjoy the book. Read to me, Read to myself, and Auto play.

In read to me mode, the text is highlighted while the story is narrated. In read to myself mode, tapping on the beginning of the sentence will start the narration. Autoplay plays and flips pages automatically, and it requires pressing the iPad’s home button to stop. In all three  modes, readers can tap on elements of the illustrations to hear audio clips of the characters.

The controls are easy to use- page turning is seamless and there are visual cues to illustrate how to swipe to to turn the page.

There is not a lot of extraneous visual stimulation within this story, and this is a good thing.  From an educational standpoint, sometimes too much visual animation and distraction can take away from truly reading a story. Having the words highlighted as the story is being read is a great feature. Plus having the ability to have children read the story themselves is equally important. Autoplay is great for those long car rides.

The message of tolerance and acceptance in today’s world is all too important. The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin sends this message in a way that makes sense to young readers.

The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin is an adorable children’s interactive storybook from Oceanhouse Media’s family of digibooks. With well-crafted illustrations, professional narration, and a timeless story of acceptance, Spookley the Swuare Pumpkin is a must-have on any children’s Halloween app list.
