My Little Pony: Twilight Sparkle, Teacher for a Day, by Ruckus Media Group (universal) brings the characters from Hasbro’s classic toys to an interactive storybook for iOS.  One of the most popular My Little Pony characters, Twilight Sparkle, narrates the story in a read-to-me option. 

I particularly was interested in using the voice recording option, a fairly new feature to the storybook market, where the voices of the parent or child can be recorded and played back for a personalized audio telling experience.  I found it easy to record my voice, but after recording, I found it difficult to figure out where to play my voice recording back.

The story is called “Friendship is Magic!” and the reader engages with Twilight Sparkle on her journey to learn about the history of Equestria.  Four other pony friends show up and celebrate the story finale at the Grand Galloping Gala. 

The story has touch-driven animations with the ponies blinking their big and pretty eyes, pink balloons popping up in the air, and apples falling out of baskets.  The story includes two video animations.  In addition, there are gaming-like “activities,” sprinkled throughout the story. 

My daughter’s favorite activity is a maze that the child can tilt the screen to guide Twilight Sparkle through.  At the end of the maze, the child is given a vocabulary word to use in personalized diary at the end of the story.

The story has 39 pages.  The techy features of animations and interactivity are pretty amazing, yet the story itself is not endearing, something I expect from a true children’s storybook.  However, if someone is not interested in a character and plot driven story, but is interested in an interactive game-like activity, then The My Little Pony app is one I would choose.

    My daughter would love the My Little Pony App. She rides horses and loves anything horse related. What little girl wouldn’t love a pink, purple, or blue pony? This app would be her favorite without a doubt. I hope she wins! Beth
