Van Gogh and the Sunflowers by Auryn Inc.(iPad only) is a beautiful interactive storybook experience based on Laurence Anholt’s book, but redesigned especially for iPad. This app mixes a lovely story that gives young readers a glimpse of what one meaningful relationship in Van Gogh’s life might have been like, while incorporating some incredible and creative interactive features.
“Where Camille lived, the sunflowers grew so high they looked like real suns – a whole field of burning yellow suns.” My daughter and I were engrossed in the story told from the perspective of Camille, the postmaster’s son who befriends Vincent Van Gogh when he comes to live in a village in the Dutch countryside, from the start.
Auryn, who make a highly regarded water-colour painting app called Auryn Ink are known for the subtlety of their illustrations and the soft textured tones they create. Like their rendition of The Little Mermaid, This storybook app showcases that magic touch particularly well in recreating and reimagining Van Gogh’s images.
Not only are illustrations beautiful, there are incredible interactive features as well. At a tap, children ages 4-11 can be transported to a virtual museum and see 10 of van Gogh’s most iconic works in a 3D tour.
The are also two games in the app. One I found particularly delightful is the “Armateur Game” where the reader can touch animated characters to see the mechanisms that make them move. With another touch, parts of the armature structure collapse. Kids have to put all the pieces back in place in a given time to win.
The other game uses Auryn’s art app in a scaled-down way just for kids. Young readers can paint the characters on each and every page. No need for a stylus, the feature caters to finger painting.

The app keeps the paint in the lines, and animates the child’s creations bringing them to life in a new way we haven’t seen in kid’s digital books before. Children will not only find creative inspiration in this digibook, but a genuine outlet for it, right in one package.
Van Gogh’s Sunflower is a wonderful introduction to Auryn’s children’s tales and an equally wonderful reminder of why they have attained such high regard amongst reviewers, parents and most of all kids. This is a must-have for any children’s digital library.
