Feel Electric for iPhone by Sesame Street is part of the Military Families “Finding the Right Word” initiative. Children can explore, learn, and track their feelings in one  app.

Parents may remember the popular TV show The Electric Company, which has been resurrected on PBS. Characters from the series guide children through the various elements of the app.

There are many different words that children and parents use to identify feelings. In Feel Electric, emotional vocabulary is not only explored, it is extended with words such as astonished, delighted, and furious.

In all, there are over 50 vocabulary words within Feel Electric. Fortunately, there’s a very smartly laid out glossary with definitions and visual representation of each emotion.

Hosts Jessica Ruiz and Danny Rebus are an integral part of the app. They not only function as narrators, or guides, but they also serve as visuals cues for emotional vocabulary. This is done without being too showy or in your face, so to speak.

For the child who wants to track their feelings, there is a journal that can be used daily. It’s easy to use. After listening to the hosts’ narration, children can swipe to find the emotion(s) that they are feeling for that day.

Of course, no edu-app is complete without some gameplay to reinforce vocabulary concepts. There are three different activities in Feel Electric that reinforce vocabulary concepts in fun and engaging ways. Children will delight in shooting the “disgusted” face in the carnival style game, or hitting “sadness” out of the park in the baseball game.

With an easy to use interface, lots of activities, and a diary, Feel Electric brings a cavalcade of emotional vocabulary at an amazing price – free!. It’s a refreshing way to teach complicated emotional vocabulary and concepts to an age where things are generally confusing. This is definitely a great choice for families.
