The amount of endless running games in the App Store is, well…. endless. Every now and then, a title like Temple Run or Jetpack Joyride comes along and adds something new to the genre. Don’t Run With A Plasma Sword , aka DRWAPS. from XperimentalZ Games is one of these titles: gorgeous and full of personality, it effortlessly blends platforming, action, and RPG elements into a fantastically entertaining experience.
When aliens and robots attack a futuristic version of Earth, comic stand employee Cornelius grabs his plasma sword and starts running. Simple enough, but there is a lot of goofy humor and thinly veiled references to past science fiction works, adding much-needed character to a genre full of fun-but-bland titles.
DRWAPS’s plot is certainly not award-worthy, but amusing enough to keep players engaged through the 28 levels in Story mode. In addition to the expansive story levels including four boss battles there are four endless levels to unlock, each with their own art style and difficulty level.
Instead of the common one or two button set-up, DRWAPS employs three buttons comfortably: jump and slide on the left, with a sword attack on the right.
All of Cornelius physical and mental abilities are are upgradeable using XP garnered from long distances, enemies, stars, and other in-level accomplishments.
The sheer range of upgrades gives DRWAPS a lot of replay value… though if the game wasn’t any fun, the replay value wouldn’t be worth much. Good thing Don’t Run With a Plasma Sword is a thrilling experience; sliding, jumping, and swinging swords is a tactile and rewarding experience.
The combination of character customization, presence of bosses, and the lengthy, well-designed levels makes Don’t Run With A Plasma Sword a sublime platforming experience. With Don’t Run With A Plasma Sword, XperimentalZ Games has nailed it on the head with an engaging and hilarious sci-fi flavored adventure. Just please remember to read the Plasma Sword User Manual before playing.
