Parents of preschoolers will be familiar with the names Geo, Bot, and Milli. Not only are they the characters of Nickelodeon’s learning cartoon, Team Umizoomi, but they are now the main characters of Team UmiZoomi Math: Zoom into Numbers (sold separately for iPad).
The Team Umizoomi app provides children with age-appropriate fundamental math concepts. Skills range from counting to simple addition and subtraction. There are five games within the app that focuses on different aspects of preschool math skills; counting, number identification, number comparison, addition and subtraction, and number sequencing.

When the child opens the app for the first time, only one game is available –the counting game. Once they reach a certain level within this game another game is unlocked. Each has a different theme. My daughter’s favorite game was Race Around Umi City in which she drove a car under appropriate the number.
As more games unlock, children can switch between them as they walk through Umi City. The games are shown as billboards or signs throughout the city. In addition to the games, there are also hidden surprises throughout; turn the street light on with a tap, make the bell ring on the bicycle, and more.
Team Umizoomi Math: Zoom into Numbers rewards children with badges and trophies as the move through the games and different levels of each game. The child’s awards are saved within Umizoomi Headquarters which can be found on the streets of Umi City.

At first, I was a bit disappointed that there were only five short games in this app. My daughter was upset until we realized that the game doesn’t really end when the next game is unlocked. Each game continues on and increases in difficulty. Once she unlocked all the games, she went back to play each game again.
Team UmiZoomi Math: Zoom into Numbers is a keeper for our house. My four year old has learned a lot from Team Umizoomi on television, but this app got her into adding and subtracting everything around the house. I’d love to see future updates include the pattern skills the show teaches as well. Even without it, however, this is a great educational app that makes learning numbers and mathematics fun for the kids.
