Rebuild by developer Sarah Northway is an iPad 2-only game that mixes the horrors of zombies and strategy of city building into a very nicely executed app. However, if the iPad classic is still being used in the household, make sure to check out the flash version, which is free.
The developer assured mean update for the original iPad should be available any day now along with Game Center achievements and leaderboards. They will be similar, but the iPad 2 version has an updated story, with same goal of ridding the city of zombies. And I’d have to say the touch interface is very nice.
The story starts off with the player at a tiny outpost with a small number of survivors right smack dab in the middle of the city that is now run by zombies. And as any zombie-killer knows, time will either be the demise of the small group of people or provide a way to expand their small area with scarce supplies into a bigger area with more supplies, which are essential to outlasting the undead hordes.
As for how to do this, the player must first pick a male or female character, customize them, name their town and pick a piece of starting equipment along with difficulty. I highly recommend starting out with easy as the levels become rather impossible as the difficulty increases. Now that the game has been setup, it’s now time for the player to expand their city and conquer some evil zombies.
Each turn allows the player to do varying tasks such as exploring a nearby block or taking out an infestation of zombies and taking over the building into their encampment. But, to do these tasks requires a balance of personnel and equipment. If they’re all busy and the big bad zombie decides to have a brain snack, the player’s game is pretty much over. This is where the strategy portion of the game comes in. While they gamer must expand to keep their current supply up, they also must recruit more survivors, which also makes expansion even more necessary or risk starvation.
The game is very unique in that it has multiple outcomes based on what the player accomplished or didn’t accomplish, how much time it took them to win or lose and whether they kept their community expanding or shrinking. While the zombie attacks are pictures, Rebuild still provides enough gameplay to keep zombie-loving gamers entertained for a few hours.
