For fans of Gears of War and Mass Effect, finding a quality 3rd-person shooter on iOS has been a difficult task, outside of the technically impressive but substance-lacking Shadowgun. M.U.S.E., the latest title from Ayopa Games and Lab Rats Studios, may not be as graphically impressive as Shadowgun, but the arcade-style gameplay and fun combo system make for a more well-rounded and fully-featured title.
Like most arcade-style shooters, the plot of M.U.S.E. is thin at best: the protagonist somehow loses his family, and then an cyborg invasion occurs. Of course, the only solution for this government agent is to grab a gun and start shooting, and that’s where the magic of M.U.S.E. takes over. Simply put, navigating through spacious levels, shooting aliens, blowing up cars, and collecting ammo has never been more fun.
M.U.S.E.‘s otherwise typical shooter gameplay is enhanced by a great combo system, which awards points for chaining together kills and destruction. Those points count towards Game Center leaderboards, and can be converted into credits, which are spent on the eighty – yes, eighty – different RPG-style upgrades available in the game, enhancing just about every ability our hero has at his disposal along the way.
Technically, M.U.S.E. is gorgeous, though at times textures and backgrounds look a little bland, completely understandable in a title with so much ambition graphically. What’s impressive about M.U.S.E.‘s graphics is the amount of destroyable items within the linear environments, engaging players to not only destroy enemies effectively, but employ a bit of strategy to garner the best possible combo. It does so at a smooth,crisp frame rate on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 – the developer does warn the game’s use of memory might affect iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4th gen users.
It may not redefine a genre, but there is a lot of value in M.U.S.E.- the winning combination of RPG and shooter elements make for a rewarding and engaging experience.. A few bland environments and silly animations aside, M.U.S.E.‘s great gameplay, tight controls, and technical prowess make for a great mobile title. If you’re looking for an adrenaline-packed, bullet-fueled action game in the App Store, M.U.S.E. is the game for you.
