Blockolicious: Chillingo Unveils Juicy New Puzzler

Tile-matching puzzle gamers have a new challenge ahead of them! The latest title from Chillingo and Hibernum Creations is sure to test your wits, acuity and patience in their new release, Blockolicious for iPhone and iPod touch and Blockolicious HD for the iPad.

This safari-themed app takes your standard tile-matching concept, like the classic Bejeweled, and adds a new and interesting ‘juice-filling’ twist to it. Contrary to the cuddly animals and cutesy themes, Blockolicious is not a leisurely joy ride through the zoo. This is a fast-paced, intense, safari hunt!

Similar to its predecessors, the goal is to get the most points, scored by matching three or more of the same coloured fruits. Instead of disappearing, the fruits combine into a ‘juice box’. Connecting three or more of the same juice boxes turns it into a ‘juice bomb’. Tap the juice bomb and the board is cleared of that colour.

The challenge comes in with the  time limits. As soon as a juice box is created, the juice quickly leaks out. If it empties, all that hard work of getting that juice box is gone and it bursts. The time goes by quick and the game makes you feel it. Sprint mode  - currently the only mode available – is two minutes of heart palpitating, fruit bursting fun.

In line with the safari theme, the game adds a little flavor to this juicy puzzle ride with animal buddies that add bonuses like time extensions, extra points, and block clearing.

The most impressive element with this game is its level of strategy. The quick tutorial will players familiar in this style of game up to speed with the games new additions. From there, it’s still a big learning curve to grasp the game nuances to achieve a truly impressive high score. That addictive element effectively gives this app some solid lasting power over similar titles.

The two-minute sprint mode can become frustratingly fast. With an open play mode (potentially the promised marathon mode?), it would give players some time to find their rhythm and work out some of that strategy. There, some backgrounds and additional in-app purchases but the game is fun without paying extra.

Blockolicious HD has the makings of being a highly addictive game with a a lot of replay value. Chillingo and Hibernum Creations have put out a solid pick for anyone looking for a fresh, new challenge in the match-three genre.
