Last year, Ravenous Games blessed the world with a heartfelt homage to tough, retro platformers with League of Evil, the story of a man/cyborg bent on destroying the League of Evil, a pixellated Dr. Strangelove- like organization of evil scientists. The adventure continues in League of Evil 2, with a fresh storyline and modernized art style, and is just as fun – if not a little overly familiar – as the original.

Experts and newbies will both jump right in – the gameplay mechanics are the same as the original, and a quick tutorial fills in the blanks for anyone unfamiliar.

Players run, jump and attack through the small, cleverly designed levels, trying to achieve the perfect 3-star speed run. There is also a briefcase hidden in each of the game’s 100 levels, and the sequel introduces different costumes for the metal-armed protagonist to wear.

 

While it’s a little disappointing Ravenous didn’t take the opportunity to bring some new gameplay elements into the fold, League of Evil 2 is just as fun to play as the original, with some gorgeous Retina artwork replacing the 8-bit visuals of the original. The controls are still some of the best around, and like the original, features a fun, thumping background soundtrack, one which fits the new art direction well, distinguishing itself from the original visually.

Some users have noted a few technical issues with the release edition, ranging from small inconveniences like crashes to complete wipes of saved games – problems which Ravenous is aware of and addressing in their first update. Those small bugs aside, League of Evil 2 is another great platforming title, taking the fun, challenging gameplay of the original and add a fresh coat of HD paint to the visuals.

    Did you say funny!? This should be easy since I’m from the League of Funny, and the League of Evil is one of our enemies. You know since they’re evil and all. I would like to win this game so I can see how it plays and I can make a game for the League of Funny. In the game the Agent will kill the evil Scientists with laughter! Making them laugh so hard that their sides split. And he’ll throw pies instead of kicking or punching. This game is actually starting to sound good. So please don’t steal my idea :p
