Main Logo for Dungeon CrawlersDungeon Crawlers (universal), by Ayopa games is an appropriately titled recent release,  is a frolicky, tactical RPG in the vein of classic games like Shining Force and Final Fantasy Tactics. This goofy, spoof-filled game is a light, entertaining, monster-slaying treasure hunt.

For anyone familiar with strategy RPGs, Dungeon Crawlers doesn’t bring anything different to the genre, but anyone new to this type of game will find it a valuable starter. Set in the catacombs of a goblin infested underground, the game is a simple, straightforward, hack-and-slash dungeon clearing.

There are two modes to the game that transition depending on the circumstances: the free-roaming mode and turn-based fight mode. In free mode, the player can explore the dungeon with no concern of damage or threats, searching out treasures and clues. Once an enemy is encountered, the game immediately transitions to the turn-based system. In this mode, the player controls 4 humorously different characters –like an ale-loving, axe-wielding thief – that combat a multitude of monsters.

Combat Image for Dungeon CrawlerThe gameplay is easy for this type of strategy RPG, although controlling the camera angles can be frustrating at times. To move, search, and fight, it’s simply a touch-based system on the device. The entire game is broken into equal squares that the character can move to, much like a standard board game.

The same goes during combat, each character has a few set attacks that the player chooses to use and then clicks on the monster they want to use the attack on. Characters gain experience for their kills, and increase in levels – boosting their strength, defense, magic attacks, and new abilities. Unlike the more common RPGs, though, the player has no control over the allocation or choosing of skills for the character. Everything happens automatically.

There are five dungeons to explore that become increasingly harder and longer. A refreshing dynamic to this game are the pop-culture references: Ghostbusters, and, my personal favorite, the original Mario Bros. add a slapstick undertone that blends seamlessly into the feel of the game.

Note: Some users have reported tech glitches, but the developers have promised a fix in an update soon.

Any RPGers looking for a reprieve from in-depth skill charts and exhausting character creations will find a few hours of entertainment here. Dungeon Crawlers may be lacking as an innovative, barrier-breaking tactical RPG, but with its humorous storyline and hours of gameplay it’s a worthwhile addition for ardent and newbie fans alike.
