When looking for easy to pick up and play but heavily addictive games, there aren’t many companies with a bigger collection than Miniclip, both online and in the App Store. Their newest iOS release Unlock, mixes the company’s trademark blend of challenge and simplicity in a 3D block puzzler with some very hands-on gameplay.
Unlock’s basic gameplay mechanic comes from the very familiar interlocking block puzzles we all played with as kids, placing those puzzles on a three-dimensional plane on the iOS device screen. Using one finger, the puzzles can be rotated for examination at any angle to figure out which piece to remove.
Removing pieces is as easy as rotating the puzzle: simply place a second finger on the screen on the desired piece, and move it in the necessary direction to separate it from the puzzle – it will automatically disappear once its no longer attached. For the most part, this control scheme works well, but on occasion, pulling on a specific piece in the more complex puzzles later on could be a little inaccurate, taking multiple touches on-screen to register the correct piece.
Each of the game’s 38 levels – spread across two difficulties – are timed and graded with the typical three-star rating. It’s definitely a little on the short side: most of the puzzles are solvable in less than 15 seconds, with only the last ten or so puzzles really challenging the player’s skills in any fashion.
Unlock might be a little too short, but its solid controls, clean presentation, and laid-back gameplay are perfect for younger gamers looking for some entertaining and colorful puzzling action.
