Back in May, we loved Ski Safari when it was released for its casual, snow-covered gameplay, but felt it could use a little more variety in its content. Last week, the game’s first major update hit the App Store, and it addresses most of these issues by adding some fresh content to the game.
The first change is one players will notice as soon as they load up the game on their iOS device – there is now a Shop button in the top right hand corner of the home screen. Included in there are three Sven costumes, “gizmos” including a coin magnets and a second chance jetpack, and consumable power-ups that are all worked into a ton of new missions.
The store feels more fully realized, with the 10 items combined between the three different categories to this point – and thankfully there are no in-app purchases, something many similar games employ that robs players of both the challenge and the chance to truly develop their skiing and cloud surfing skills.
Ski Safari 1.1 also introduces a sweet new level called ‘Howling Hills’, which features a darker colour palette, and it’s harder with icy ponds to fall into and new friends, enemies and obstacles. The level hill only opens for players when they have completed enough objectives to earn ‘Eagle Wings’ status, adding replay value to the original hill.
Each of the new costumes comes with three distinct mission for them that are both amusing and really ramp up the challenge. The mission lists adapt to whichever character Sven takes one. In fact most of the new challenges incorporate the new goodies in some way. There is also a new animal to ride. The wolf is super fast and can carry as big a payload of critters as the snow mobile.
Ski Safari (universal) still doesn’t have quite the feature set of the some heavy-hitters in the genre, but the update adds beauty and value. Hopefully, Defiant will continue to add upgrades and new equipment, and a higher combo limit, because Ski Safari is a simple and compelling endless skier/runner with loads of personality and great gameplay.
