Children with their endless imaginations will love Auryn Inc.’s new release, Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery. This book brings the amusing and lighthearted story written by Jamie Lee Curtis and illustrated by Laura Cornell to life.

The story follows the thoughts of a little boy who wonders what happens to balloons after he accidentally lets his go. He realizes he isn’t the only one this has happened to and his imagination takes off on a wondrous journey of dancing balloons and many other adventures. Although written as a lighthearted and somewhat whimsical story, it takes quite seriously a part of life both children and adults struggle with: letting go.

Where Do Balloons Go? An Uplifting Mystery has a lot going on within it’s virtual pages, so the life lessons may not be grasped completely by little ones, although it does provide an opportunity for discussion. Younger kids will focus a lot on the interactive properties on each page, including pop-up hints. Some of the hidden items are not so clear, so there are a few surprises. Older kids will just be captivated by the plot.

Children and parents can listen to Jamie Lee Curtis narrate the book to them, or they can read it themselves by turning off the voice over in the settings. Hints and music can also be turned on and off in this location. Readers flip pages back and forth using the arrows at the bottom of the screen. Some pages extend over on the screen requiring the reader to tap and hold the side of the screen so that it slides over. When the screen does expand, arrows will appear on the side where it slides.

In addition to the story, Where Do Balloons Go? also offers a Balloon Theatre where children can create their own balloon creatures, save them, and put them on stage. Once on stage, children record their voices and movements of their creatures on stage. My girls had a blast with this part!  Hint: one of the hidden sections includes an animal balloon game where children create animals out of balloons on-screen, which is a real hoot.

I loved the story and the extra features included. The hidden sections can be tricky, but once found, the kids will never forget them – and isn’t tapping on the screen randomly the fun part sometimes?   Thanks to the great story, visuals, and interactive features, Where Do The Balloons Go? (iPad) has become our favorite book in the house.

  15. Hard bound copies of children’s books truly stimulate reading and joy in the printed word. Love digital books, but they cannot be the only thing in a child’s life. What a creative, captivating tale. Thanks for sharing.
