In the four years since the App Store debuted, Tapulous‘s Tap Tap Revenge series has seen numerous sequels and artist-exclusive iterations, all focused around the same three-button gameplay. It’s hard to revitalize something without completely reinventing it, but they might have just done it with Tap Tap Revenge Tour (iPhone).

The game is all about the Tour mode, which allows you to play opening, supporting, and headliner acts in a new city every day – inviting players to return every day for new challenges. The app even provides a calendar showing the different tour cities for each day through the next week. The replay factor is the highest of any Tap Tap game yet, and it gives the game a different feel every day you open it. The best part of the Tour mode is that along with each new tour, players are given a free song.

The game is free to download with in-app purchases to buy premium songs, but they become optional because of the daily free tracks and engaging tour mode. The entire app has also been enhanced so that the clutter has been reduced, and everything is smoother and more responsive with each tap, shake, and swipe. The songs have also been improved with new music video backgrounds for some songs, and a tighter connection between the musical beats and the circles to tap.

One of the neatest new additions is slice orbs which let you flick your thumb upward in a mini Fruit Ninja-style. The Tour version redefines the Tap Tap brand, and offers great reasons to pick it up whether you’re a veteran or newbie to the franchise.

One drawback is that the game is still has the three column set-up, so it can be repetitive just because we’ve seen the style so many different times now. Also, if you’re playing for free, you get one new song per day, but the other tours songs will likely be repeats. Also, there’s not much in the way of social connection compared to the popular multiplayer mode in Tap Tap Revenge 3.

Tap Tap Revenge Tour (Free, iPhone) provides a fresh take on the rhythm genre with the great tour mode which makes it a worthwhile download that you can fully enjoy for free.
