Toca Train (universal) by Toca Boca is a new interactive game for young children – although calling it a ‘game’ is a bit of a stretch: there are no objectives, no rules, no winners and no losers. Toca Train is a train simulator aimed at children between the ages of three and seven, and gives them the tools make up their own coal-powered adventure.
Children get to hop on a train to tour the local island. There are six train stops along the route where children can choose to stop or not. Children can also board passengers, chose their seats and they can also choose which passengers need to get off at a certain stop. In addition to passengers, trains can also be loaded with cargo.
The dashboard of the train is fairly simple. Children can choose how fast the train goes and blow the horn when they want to. By using their fingers and swiping to the left, the conductor can sip a cup of coffee, while swiping to the right allows them a different view of their travels. Players can also decide if they want to view the train’s passage from above the train or in the conductor’s seat.
Before hitting one of the six stops, players will be alerted as to what kind of stop they are approaching. A flashing person will appear when hitting a train station to pick up or drop off passengers and a flashing crane will appear when approaching a cargo station. When loading cargo, children will have a choice as to what type of cargo they want to load. Only one item of cargo can be carried at a time and up to four passengers can ride the train at one time.
Toca Train is geared towards children aged three to seven, but I would think the older end of this curve would get bored easily – I found my two year old played it a lot longer than my five year old. It is a cute game to allow a child’s imagination run free, but a bit boring for the older kids.
A few games or puzzles added at some of the stations would hold their attention a bit longer and make this a more engaging game for the older children. But for the younger crowd who want to travel and live the life of a train conducter, Toca Train (universal) is a cute and colorful way for chilrden to enjoy the wonders of the railroad.
