The App Store is packed with creativity, but there’s always room for more, and Synesthetic, by Alex Dantis is a music rhythm game that doubles as an interactive visualizer. It’s another great example of how creative games in the App Store can be, and offers an overload of color that truly shines on your iOS screen.
The game is like a psychedelic roller coaster that always plays your favorite songs. The entire game connects to the music library on the iOS device, and after opening the game and pick a song, players will be rocking to the beat in no time – the app only takes a few seconds to design the track from scratch.
There are three different game modes to play. Every track offers a tube to ride on with obstacles scattered on the tube that correlate to the beat of the given song. Controls are tilt-based, moving left or right to revolve around the tube 360 degrees. It’s a very smooth experience, and although each mode is relatively the same, there are gates and varying multipliers throughout to keep players chasing the elusive high score.
The entire game is reminiscent of Groove Coaster or Beatstream, but in 3D with your own music. Like those titles, the high point of the game is the graphical engine, immersing players into the colorful world riding along the track. The tilt controls get your whole body into the action, especially as you’re grooving along to your own songs.
While the controls are smooth, the overall speed of the game makes it quite challenging. Also, the obstacles somewhat blend into the surroundings to make them a bit tough to discern at the high speeds. However, these are minor complaints for a game that offers a ton of colorful, high-speed action for fans of any genre of music.
Synesthetic (universal) is a deluxe audio visual experience that is a should buy and a great way to appreciate your music.
