mage of mass destruction iconMage of Mass Destruction (universal) by eques ludens is a simple point-and-shoot game where players blast their way through an on-coming group of attacking enemies. It’s not the most complex or graphically intense title in the App Store, but its still a fun arcade shooter with lots of humor for gamers to enjoy.

Players have two weapons with which to inflict destruction on their attackers: magic bolts targeting individual enemies, and mighty, screen-clearing explosions.  To launch a magic bolt towards an enemy, simply draw a line from the mage to the creature. Detonating an explosion is as simple as touching the desired location for the explosion, and both attacks result in your enemies flying through the air, bouncing off walls, trees and hills.

Mage of Mass Destruction is composed of seven unique levels and more than 20 fully animated enemies ranging from rabbits and frogs to spiders, gargoyles and even zombies. Also available is “slow motion bullet time” which breaks up the game somewhat, making it easier to grab various power-ups (extra lives, magic potions, health, etc).

While it’s tempting to just toss out magic bolts and explosions everywhere, there’s actually a little strategy involved as well, with a limited supply of mana available from which a player’s magic is drawn. It does replenish over time, but slowly enough that – in order to advance beyond level 1 – players will need to be selective and decisive with each and every bolt blast and explosion.

mage of mass destruction 8There’s not much of a story line, and the  3D graphics aren’t spectacular, but there are over 60 Game Center achievements to earn numerous leaderboards to compare high-scores with friends. The music is decent, and the sound effects are humorous, if not slightly repetitive.

Mage of Mass Destruction (universal) isn’t a revolutionary or genre-defining arcade title, but it’s still a fun little point-and-shoot game well suited for those looking to simply kill a little time by blowing up hoards of approaching creatures.
