Roads of Rome 2 (universal) by Realore is a sequel to an award-winning PC/ios simulation series (read our review of the first one here), and recently found its way over to the App Store. It manages to keep the same casual strategy of the PC version, bringing it to the smaller screen without making major sacrifices to what makes the game so fun.

Roads to Rome 2 takes place in ancient Italy, and mixes casual real-time strategy with the addictive time-management and city-building gameplay so popular on iOS. Playing the role of Victorius, an honorable Roman general, the goal is to create paths in unknown and dangerous areas occupied by barbarians and wild animals in the search for the enchanting potion that will save Caesar from dying.

Victorius also has to leave gifts for Gods to get blessings for Caesar’s survival. The game is meant for the casual gamers who love to use brains for the sake of pure entertainment since the game does involve some planning.

One noticable improvement from the PC version are the graphical ones, adding weather effects and improving the character models.. The graphics are rich and the contrasting colors make it easy to distinguish between objects, and the unique look of each playing field keeps each level feeling fresh, even when repeating largely the same objectives throughout. The game’s soundtrack is no slouch either, adding another bit of atmosphere to an already engrossing title.

In addition to its 41 campaign levels across 4 ‘episodes’, Roads to Rome 2 features Game Center integration for leaderboards and achievements to compete with friends for the true master of the kingdom. There’s also a nice ‘relaxed’ mode to go along with the normal timed mode, so those looking for a more relaxing adventure can enjoy the game as well.

If there’s any issues in Rome 2, they are quite minor. The controls require a lot of precision, so without careful movements, it’s very easy to make mistakes and place people in the wrong spot.

But there’s never really a need to rush through any of the numerous objectives, so for time-management and casual real-time strategy fans, Roads of Rome 2 (universal) is an easy purchase. And it’s even a great recommendation for more casual gamers looking for a new experience, a simple, well-paced title for players to enjoy.
