Cats Away (universal) by NTT Resonant Inc. is the latest in a long line of entertaining iOS games starring cats. This time around, its the players job to abduct domestic felines, using fancy spaceships and technology to aid along the way. Even if it is committing kitty kidnapping, Cats Away is an addictive little arcade title.
In each of the game’s different worlds, players control a spaceship with their finger, trapping cats in the ship’s tractor beam, and pulling them to the top of the screen to earn points. By creating combos and picking up special power-ups, players rack up high scores within the time limit, earning stars for high scores. There are also coins to collect in each level, which are used to buy and upgrade improved ships along the way.
The gameplay is quite simple, packing a ton of cuteness in with the action-packed rounds. Different sized cats, from teeny kittens to fat, lazy cats can be picked up, though the bigger the cat, the harder it is to direct it to the sky with the beam. For a moment, it felt wrong watching all the stray, big-eyed furballs I was hurtling towards the stars – but when I saw the combo bonuses I was racking up, I didn’t feel so bad.
I would like to see the game continue to expand. There’s really only one mode, and after awhile, it can get repetitive trying to grind through enough rounds to upgrade equipment or unlock new levels. I think the game would be a perfect match for some wild multiplayer, with two players competing for the same tiny, clawed beasts on the expansive level screens.
But for a fun single-player arcade experience, Cats Away is adorably addictive game. It’s one any iOS gamer can enjoy, full of hidden pussycats and fast-paced action for the young and old.
