Super Durak (universal) by Kirill Edelman is a fast paced but fun card game that is a breath of fresh air from all the rehashed poker games in the App Store. Super Durak offers something for everything: it’s a fun time killer playing against the computer, but it can get very competitive when playing against folks online or with buddies on the same screen.

Super Durak is for one to four player, either against the computer, or with three  friends, either on the same device or through the online multiplayer. The game can seem confusing at first, but a detailed tutorial explains the game clearly and concisely. The game rotates with one player attacking and the rest defending. While defending, players can also counter attack and turn the game back on the first attacker.

If players can’t defend an attack, they’ll be stuck with whatever cards are on the table. Each player is reset with six cards before each hand, and the object is to be the first with no cards left once the deck runs out.

I’m a fan of both fun and competitive card games and Super Durak really has the best of both worlds. Once I picked started playing, I found myself starting game after game against the computer. I lost a bunch the first few games, but soon I started picking up on the little tricks and felt confident enough to go online and play against some others.

The option for pass-and-play is nice to have, but Super Durak is a little too fast paced and the rhythm seems to get broken. I tried it with two players and I can say I wouldn’t try it with three or four, it would take too long to pass between devices, and furthermore, hard to develop strategies without knowing what’s going on with other players.

All-in-all, though, Super Durak is a great purchase for anyone looking for a fun, engaging card game. A fantastic alternative for poker or solitaire, the pacing and strategy will keep players engaged for hours.
