One Tap Hero from Chillingo is a platformer that will immediately remind players of Run Roo Run: small levels, and auto-running character, and simple one touch controls are at the core of both those games. But with a story and a lot of puzzles to solve, One Tap Hero goes above and beyond its predecessors in the genre.
When it comes to video game premises, I’m usually not one to use the word ‘cute’ – but that’s exactly how to describe the premise behind the game. A little white creature’s girlfriend is captured by an evil wizard, and for giggles, he’s turned her into a teddy bear. Now everyone loves a teddy bear – except for when its your girlfriend, and the only way to save her is to collect the stars through the game’s 100 levels and use their power to free her.
In terms of design, One Tap Hero is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer; players have to navigate the character through increasingly complex levels, activating switches, climbing ladders, and teleporting around the stages to find the stars and exit. Unlike Run Roo Run, a player’s character doesn’t just move from left to right – different bumpers spread across the level are responsible for changing one’s direction, which allows for a lot more navigation in the intricate level maps, and a lot more reason to replay them and find everything.
What I liked is how One Tap Hero manages to have the best of both platforming worlds: it can ride a one-button mechanic like the typical endless runner, but it has massive stages filled with traps and secrets that only the best games of its kind can have. It’s all wrapped with some beautiful Retina graphics, full of vibrant color and detail.
With 100 levels to play – 20 of them unlockable via IAP or by finding the hidden keys throughout the game - One Tap Hero is a game that’s going to be on my iOS device for awhile. A charming story, silky smooth gameplay, and a great control scheme make this game a must buy for any platforming fan with an iOS device.
