With the long Labor Day weekend ahead of us, many of the app store’s greatest titles have received major content updates. We’ve collected some of them here, and are giving a few of them away in another one of our great giveaways! Check them out below – and get ready for a lot more zombie, ninja, and pirate-packed action on your iOS device.

Bag It!

by Hidden Variable Studios

Universal – $.99

For those who haven’t heard of this awesome arcade puzzler yet, Bag It! is a fun and fast-paced game of bagging groceries. Believe us, it’s a lot more exciting than it sounds, and it got even better recently when version 2.3 hit the App Store. The update adds a new mode called Seedy’s Booty, adding a new matching challenge and social integration for high score competitions with Facebook friends. Even more impressive is that the mode is played in 3D, a subtle but noticeable enhancement of the game’s already beautiful graphics.

Brainsss

by Lonely Few

Universal – $0.99

The fun thing about Brainsss is how it reverses the typical player role in the zombie universe: in this real-time strategy game, the goal is to control a horde of zombies and infect the local folk. It’s an addicting twist on the genre, and the game’s 1.5 update that hit the App Store yesterday was a fantastic addition to the game. The biggest parts of the updates make the game more accessible: extensive new tutorials, a Casual mode, and variable game speeds have all been added to the package. There’s also iCloud support, and optimized levels and controls on the technical side. Finally, a massive content update finishes off the package, adding 19 new heroes, 11 new locations, and 15 new levels to bring the game’s total to 72.

Doodle Jump

by Lima Sky

iPhone – $.99, iPad – $2.99

Just when everyone thought Doodle Jump was finished, Lima Sky’s returned with a 3.0 update to the iPhone version of the game. This time around, there’s a brand-new ninja theme, with all new power ups, obstacles, coins to collect, and enemies to fight throughout. There’s also a store with things like costumes to purchase, each with their own special ability. If you missed out on Doodle Jump when it took the App Store by storm by back in the day, the newest edition of the game is a fantastic, content-packed game not to be missed.

Fieldrunners 2

by Subatomic Studios

iPhone/iPod touch – $2.99

We thought Fieldrunners 2 was the best tower defense game ever to hit iOS in our review a couple months back, so we were pretty excited for the first content update to arrive. It did this week, and it didn’t disappoint: along with adding new maps, Game Center leaderboards, and an endless mode, Subatomic Studios took the time to address some of the smaller issues in the game. First of all, they’ve added a casual mode for players to hone their tower-building skills, and made levels faster for better play on the go – along with the ability to save in-game progress before exiting, a great addition for some of the lengthier levels. This is one of the great games of 2012, so don’t miss out on this genre-defining title.

Plague, Inc.

Buy Plague, Inc. Here

by Ndemic Creations

Universal – $.99

Plague Inc. turned out to be one of the indie breakouts of early 2012 and we loved it. The first big content update has made its way to the App Store, and it adds an entire new plague type for players to build and infect the world with. Part of the game’s beauty is the ability to strategize the viral destruction of the world with cold, calculated moves, and the new plague type only adds more addicting hours of gameplay to its already deep package. New graphics, music, gameplay, and events await inPlague Inc.’s first expansion, a game that’s surely to be on a lot of people’s Top 10 lists at the end of the year.
