Mole Kart 2 Evolution (universal) by Taomee Mobile is the sequel to the much maligned Mole Kart, a pretty obvious rip off of many of Mario Kart‘s infamous track designs from recent iterations. The developers are back with a sequel, keeping the charming cartoon personality of the original, but infusing it with some original style and level design, making it feel like a full-fledged kart racer made for iOS.
The biggest difference between Mole Kart 2 and the original is the introduction of a story mode, which pit players in a number of different race types – including some that don’t involve speed at all. Over 50 stages of collecting coins, battling enemies and yes, winning actual races are waiting in the central game mode, with new races unlocking by earning three-star ratings on each level.
Another fantastic change is the surprisingly robust upgrade and accessory system for karts and racers. There are a number of unlockable karts – complete with new drivers – available to be unlocked, all of which can be upgraded in RPG ‘level’ fashion with coins earned in and after races. There are also ‘accessories’, special enhancements that can be added to a kart to enhance certain features. This helps with the varied objectives and give players a bit of an advantage in some of the game’s more difficult races.
Graphically, Mole Kart 2 consists of the same bright 3D colors of the original – unfortunately, it’s not going to turn anyone’s head, relying on basic graphical effects and minimal background designs. The controls are quite sharp, however, and the new drifting mechanic works really well, giving players boosts for mastering curves and holding out drifts.
There aren’t a whole lot of quality kart racers on iOS, and Mole Kart 2 is a step in the right direction for both the franchise and the genre – and with multiplayer and more modes planned in future updates, this game is going to be holding a spot on my iPhone for a long time. A great purchase for racing fans, and kids looking for some Mario Kart-style action on their iPhone or iPad.
