Whoowasit? (universal) by Ravensburger Digital is a mobile adaptation of the award-winning Reiner Knizia mystery board game, where children of the castle must work as detectives using their ability to talk to animals in order to save the kingdom from an evil wizard who stole the king’s magical ring.
Whether the user goes multi-player or plays solo, a number of actions must be carried out during the game through a series of turns in order to uncover clues. These tasks involve searching, collecting items, performing magic, and talking to animals after feeding them their preferred food.
The entry of rooms is determined by using touch to roll the die, which allows up to four rooms to be unlocked per turn – but beware of landing the die on the ghost side because it will spook the user’s character into different rooms. The app also contains a simple, non interactive version under the “chest mode” which relies on memory and matching to play.
This app contains a great, easy-to-understand tutorial and amazing colorful 3D graphics that looked beautiful on my iPad’s retina display. The cute sound effects were engaging and added an amusing quality to the game play. The dialogue follows right behind, with a corny silliness that will cause anyone to chuckle out loud.
For being a kid’s game, I felt that the app seemed a little too difficult for a younger audience with out the help of an adult. I also would have liked to see the graphics be smoother in animation because it would enhance visual effects. At times I had to use my finger to shake the virtual die before tossing it in order to make sure it flipped on different sides, which was a little frustrating.
Whoowasit? is a delightful mystery game filled with action that will entertain users of all ages. It is a great board game for the family that will exercise the brain using deep thought, memory, and strategy.
