Amazing Runner (universal) by Freyr Games is the latest endless runner to hit the App Store, packing the power of the Unreal Engine under its hood. While it’s not the most robust offering in the App Store, there are some unique tweaks to the genre that make the game worth a look for endless fans.

Like most endless games, there isn’t a complex story at the game’s core. The goal is simple: run for as long as possible Temple Run style, picking up gems along the way to buy upgrades and new characters. There are three different characters to play with, and the expected upgrades to the game’s various power-ups to help players power to new high scores.

If there’s one thing that separates Amazing Runner from its counterparts, its the game’s sense of speed. It doesn’t take long for runs to reach breakneck speed, and although there aren’t a lot of different enemies or obstacles, the ability to operate on the walls and ceilings of certain areas gives it a different feel. And even with the powerful engine of Unreal fueling the game at its highest speeds, Runner plays smoothly on Retina-capable devices, smooth and crisp as can be.

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of different environments or cool power-ups to earn, so replaying the game comes down to how much a player enjoys the gameplay. More varied environments and the ability to unlock things that change a character’s physical appearance would help to bring the game up to speed in terms of replayability with similar titles.

Despite its limited amount of content, the game’s graphics and sense of speed combines for a fun, futuristic endless runner, on either the iPhone or iPad screens. Amazing Runner is definitely worth a download for endless fans looking for a new addiction, or gamers looking for a simple, enjoyable showcase piece for their device.
