Fishdom 2 (iPad only) by Playrix Entertainment is a tile puzzler where the prize money is meant for only one thing – fish. Build and customize a fish tank paradise by purchasing plant décor and various types of aquatic life with money earned from playing the tile puzzle. Don’t worry about high maintenance – there’s no tank cleaning or fish feeding involved.
In order to score the cash, blocks must be swapped around by tapping to make them disappear. The goal is to target the gold tiles and make them vanish by creating a matching row of three or more. There is a time limit for each level, but pop up bubbles give out useful hints and advice during play. When five or more tiles get matched up, the user earns bomb privileges in order to vanish larger amounts of blocks.
As the cash is gained, it can be used to improve the aquarium. As fish and accessories are purchased, the fish, beauty, and comfort meters fill up in the upper right hand corner. When filled, these meters unlock new fish, ornaments, and tank backgrounds as well as earn the user a trophy cup. The app also provides a section called fishpedia, which is a dictionary that informs about the tank fish, including type, origin, size, fun facts, and a real life photo.
The best aspect about this app is the puzzle game, which makes this app so fun and addicting. I love that the winnings from game play can be put to use for creating and personalizing a virtual aquarium that can be taken anywhere on the go. The app deserves kudos for its’ explanatory tutorial and soothing calm background music, which make users feel like they are sailing along on a Caribbean cruise.
For an app that relies on so much imagery and color, I felt that the graphics were a little too pixellated on my iPad’s retina display and could use a sharper look. Also, I was disappointed to find out that the fish do not need to be fed or the tank cleaned. I think it takes away from the reality of owning an aquarium, even a virtual one.
Fishdom 2 is a great two-in-one game app that users will love and enjoy. With plenty of space for both creativity and fast thinking, this app will keep users coming back for more. Sometimes there can never be enough fish!
