Oh Hi! Octopi! (universal) by Kode80 LLC is an arcade game with lots of classic sytlings, showing us how much can be accomplished with a sledgehammer and some paint bubbles. In this game, there is only one way to greet octopi – knocking them out with color.
Users must navigate the little hammer guy using touch to move left or right, and tapping to whack. There are a number of tactics to knock out the octopi by color matching them. Falling octopi will knock out colors of its’ own kind, while stunned octopi can be arranged in rows for combos that will earn high points. Smash out ten octopi to move up to the next round, but be careful – the longer the game is played, the faster the octopi will get, and aiming the wrong color paint bubbles will cause them to multiply.
The most amusing aspect about this game is the ongoing sledge hammering, which seems to never come to an end – I found it a fun virtual way to stress release. I love that the app keeps it’s old classic user interface to give it that same old school feel, and the cute graphics stay colorful in HD gameplay. I was pleased to discover that the game is quite a challenge despite its’ simplicity.
There is one major problem I found with the controls that made gameplay extremely difficult – the touch controls do not have designated area to easily maneuver from left to right, causing the user much confusion. Also, there is far too much tapping involved which can get too tiring, especially with all that hammering. A new controls system with perhaps specific buttons for movement may fix this dilemma.
Oh Hi! Octopi! is a fun, complex action puzzler that will keep fans of the classics coming back for more. This app provides users with a playground for fast thinking, while also acting as a gym to work out those finger muscles.
