Stunt Star: The Hollywood Years (universal) by Phase Three Interactive is a new physics game with a Hollywood twist. It’s going to take the director a few rolls of film and a series of crashes to shoot the perfect scene with you as the stunt driver. Nonetheless, crashing, no matter how it happens – exploding, smashing, falling, catching on fire – is always one fun ride.

Using touch to tap the green pedal to go and the red pedal to brake, players must land the vehicle on the black and white flag in one piece. As the game progresses, new actions that become available, such as extra buttons and holding down the pedals allow the vehicle to perform extra tricks. No need to worry about steering – there’s only one direction of travel – forward.

The objective is to score high, earn trophies, and unlock vehicles by completing the stunt under the time limit. Before each turn, users are required to draw a ramp in a designated box located in the level to manage the impact and distance of jumps. Of course, there is only one way to test if it works – keep that finger on the gas pedal. And if the stuntman survives and achieves the stunt, he’ll show off his victory dance – which inspires me to do a little jiggle myself, after what seems like an endless cycle of collisions.

The best part about this game is the unknown outcome of each stunt attempt, which makes gameplay exciting and entertaining. The 3D graphics and animation were impressive on my iPad 3 and the sound effects were awesome. I really liked that the controls are simple and easy to navigate, with no sensitivity issues whatsoever.

I only found a few minor areas where the app could use some improvement. I felt that the game could have incorporated more physics puzzles besides simply drawing a line to adjust a ramp, such as manipulating bridges, or finding hoops to jump through. I also found that during the stunt performance, users cannot zoom in or zoom out, making it difficult to judge distance with the eye. Although users can zoom while drawing the ramp, I think zooming should also be incorporated during the stunt.

Stunt Star is a fun, addicting action game for users who don’t mind a crash and burn. Complex thinking and taking giant leaps will make any user a stunt star – Lights, camera, action!
