Angry Birds Seasons
iPhone – $.99/iPad – $2.99
Nothing says holidays in the App Store like an update to the Angry Birds franchise, and this year is no different, with Seasons adding a new batch of content for gamers to enjoy. Thirty new levels await in ‘Haunted Hogs’, where the birds find themselves chasing those darn pigs through a haunted house full of intricate level designs, new bricks, and of course, Frankenswine.
Apocalypse Max: Better Dead Than Undead
Universal – FREE
The best way to describe Apocalypse Max is a touchscreen Contra with zombies. It’s a side-scrolling action game with a lot of platforming action, and a ton of zombie-shooting action, complete with unlockable and upgradable weapons to find along the way. This week, a 1.2 update hit, adding a new Halloween theme and a bonus world with new explosive barrels, and new music to add to the already-great soundtrack. Best of all, it’s gone free for the holiday, so make sure to grab a copy right away!
Universal – $2.99
There’s nothing like getting the crap scared out of oneself on Halloween, and that’s where Dark Meadow has gamers covered. When it comes to moody, creepy atmosphere, the world of Dark Meadow is second to none. One of the first substantive Unreal Engine games, Meadow features some flashy HD graphics and top-notch dialogue, topping off a creepy first-person adventure with some pleasing aesthetics. Definitely not a game to be played under the sheets while the power is out: this game is going to make you jump.
Earn to Die
by Not Doppler
iPhone/iPad – $.99
Part action driving game, and part physics-packed mayhem, Earn to Die is an interesting mix of progressive casual gameplay and challenging level design. To celebrate the holiday, Earn to Die has added a new Halloween mode, complete with a new batch of achievements for players to find. Bashing through dead people and buildings are no longer enough: now there are pumpkins for players to destroy on their way to freedom!
iPhone – $2.99/iPad – $7.99
Fieldrunners 2 is the king of tower defense games in the App Store, and with a number of big and small changes in the latest update, it continues to be the front-runner in the genre. For Halloween, there’s a new BOOM-kin tower available, which will breathe fire down onto the unlucky army men careening towards the ever-important bases players are charged with defending. There’s also a brand-new coin system for unlocking new towers, and to top it off, the app’s been optimized to work about 30% faster. Who said Halloween was just about candy?

We loved Mikey Shorts when it first released – and if you still haven’t played it, there’s no better time than now to grab a copy. This free holiday-themed game features 4 special Halloween-themed levels, complete with their own dedicated Game Center leaderboards. The original game also received an update with new challenge levels and unlockable costumes, which only means one thing: more platforming perfection!

Scribblenauts Remix continues to receive amazing updates with another new playground for Max to play in this Halloween. But this update isn’t just about an awesome new sandbox: it also adds a new missile-shooting mini-game and a themed avatar pack full of creatures like skeleton warriors and a cyclops. A great title for any age, Scribblenauts continues to be an endlessly entertaining iOS experience.
Universal – $.99
Ski Safari is one of the most addicting games to hit iOS in 2012, and while its had other updates before, the one that hit this week might be the biggest and best yet. Along with a brand-new Halloween-themed course called Monster Mountain, version 1.3 adds a new Count Sven costume, coffin vehicle, upgrades, and ranks to achieve, adding a ton of content and replayability to the game. Winter is right around the corner, but there’s no need to dust off the skis for some slope-carving, backflip-filled action.
Organ Trail: Director’s Cut
Universal – $.99
Nothing says scary and spooky like a zombie apocalypse, and this modern adaptation of The Oregon Trail not only maintained the despair of the original, but added to the hopelessness with some awesome integration of modern game mechanics into its core. Grab a copy of this game while it’s on sale, and experience some of the special Halloween events until they disappear from the game November 7th – including a Frankenstein boss fight for players to conquer.
Walking Dead: The Game
Universal – $4.99
Walking Dead isn’t necessarily a Halloween-themed game or update, but this moody port of the episodic console game is not only full of scary moments, but terrifies players on a deeper subliminal level, forcing gamers to make difficult moral choices throughout its arresting narrative. ‘Episode 3: A Long Road Head’ just arrived on iOS, and with only two episodes remaining, an explosive, devastating finale is waiting right around.
